Breaking Bad…News.

My original plan for this week was to write a post about our kitchen wedding, but as I left to take Vilas for a walk this morning, I saw Matt’s car turn onto our street, returning from work at only 8:45. I immediately feared the worst- I thought someone had died. Thankfully, that was not his news.

But what he did say felt devastating in its own way: because of volatility in the South American market and new restrictions on importation that limit foreign business for the time being, our move to Argentina has been called off.

Coming off the high of our amazing wedding weekend, this news is quite sobering. I cried a lot. We are dealing with the disappointment. We have spent the morning unraveling nearly all of the plans we had made- we called our renters, our friends to whom we had just sold Matt’s car, our parents. And among other things, this news was ironic because at 6:33 this morning, I got an email from the House Hunters International casting director, who wanted to set up a phone conference later this week.

But in the grand scheme of things, we know that we are very fortunate people. Matt’s job is not in jeopardy- the global market for his industry is doing quite well, and in fact, we could move to China with his company, but we’d have to live in Wuhan, and if you saw the news last week, you’ll know why we are passing on that opportunity– and we have our health, our adorable pooch, a home to live in, and, as demonstrated by our wedding celebration on Friday, an incredible group of friends and family whom we love. So we are lucky people. Happy people.

To have this news dropped on us immediately after our wedding feels pretty jarring, but having just affirmed our commitment to each other on Friday, I take so much comfort in knowing that our marriage is strong enough to withstand whatever comes our way- the good, the bad, the ugly.

To quote my mother-in-law, “As GPS tells us, ‘recalculate.'” So recalculate we will. And we’ll keep you posted.

  1. Jenne-

Matto's call this morning totally freaked me out too. Especialy when he prefaced it “I'm sorry to say this over the phone”. OMG, I almost had a heart attack! I can't imagine all the emotions you are going through dealing with this huge change thrown at you…and House Hunters, really?! But we are thinking of you guys and REALLY REALLY happy everyone is ok!

  2. Gotta say, my TomTom GPS has a habit of directing me to my destination via the most ridiculous routes. So far, I've always arrived where I needed to be (but sometimes very confused).
